Jasmonates are a class of plant hormones that play a critical role in regulating various developmental processes, as well as in plant defense mechanisms. These hormones are derived from the essential fatty acid linolenic acid, and their biosynthesis is triggered by various stress signals, such as herbivory, mechanical damage, or pathogen attack.

In cannabis plants, jasmonates are particularly important for regulating the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, such as cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. These compounds are responsible for many of the medicinal and recreational properties of cannabis, and their production is tightly regulated by a complex network of signaling pathways, in which jasmonates play a key role.

For example, studies have shown that treating cannabis plants with jasmonic acid (JA), a synthetic analog of jasmonates, can significantly increase the production of cannabinoids, such as THC and CBD, as well as terpenes, which contribute to the aroma and flavor of cannabis. JA treatment can also enhance the plant’s resistance to various pathogens and pests, as well as to abiotic stresses, such as high temperatures or drought.

Furthermore, recent research has revealed that the biosynthesis of jasmonates in cannabis plants is itself regulated by a complex feedback loop, involving various genes and transcription factors. For example, the expression of key enzymes in the jasmonate biosynthetic pathway, such as LOX and AOS, is induced by JA treatment, but also by other hormones, such as auxin and cytokinin. At the same time, the expression of genes encoding jasmonate receptors, such as COI1, is also regulated by JA and other hormones, creating a dynamic and finely-tuned regulatory system.

Overall, jasmonates play a critical role in the growth, development, and defense of cannabis plants, and their manipulation offers a promising avenue for improving the quality and yield of cannabis crops.
