In cannabis cultivation, the term “lollipop” refers to a pruning technique used to remove the lower branches and leaves of the plant to promote better growth and yield. The process involves cutting off the small branches, also known as “suckers,” and large fan leaves that are located on the lower part of the plant’s stem, leaving only the buds and topmost branches.

This technique helps to redirect the plant’s energy towards the top canopy, where the most significant buds and flowers are produced, instead of being wasted on the lower parts of the plant. By removing the lower leaves, growers can increase airflow and light penetration, which helps to prevent mold and mildew and allows for better nutrient uptake.

The term “lollipop” comes from the shape of the plant after the pruning process, which resembles a lollipop with a stick-like stem and a round, bushy top. This technique is typically performed during the flowering stage of growth, once the plant has developed a few sets of leaves, and the grower can accurately assess which branches to remove without harming the plant. Overall, lollipopping is an effective way to maximize the plant’s yield and improve the quality of the buds.
